First discussion thread! Taking a break from our usual Video of the Week to ask what you’d love to see from rowing media, in terms of both coverage and editorial, in the future.
Discussion on where the sport is heading. Are the Olympics still the pinnacle? Why aren't World Champs rated so well? Will FISA ever stop being euro-centric? What's happening with lighties? Will 2K races continue to be the standard? Can the World Professional Sculling Trophy be revived - I like the idea of challengers trying to knock off the champ in match races at a time, distance and place of the Champ's choosing. Coastal rowing seems to be a thing these days, but surf boats have been around for over a century - what's the difference, why don't we embrace surfies as rowers?
Love it - in fact that was one of the inspirations for starting up this newsletter to begin with. I published a piece on how rowing might adapt for the future at the Olympics in December (link here: https://rowingrelated.substack.com/p/the-future-of-rowing-at-the-olympics) and one on coastal rowing in February (link here: https://rowingrelated.substack.com/p/surfs-up) - in each case there was something of a reaction but would love to spark more discussion on these topics.
Exactly. In Australia for example, we get very little coverage on mainstream media and yet we won the point score at last weekends World Cup. I think personalizing these incredible athletes will really help.
An interview with Steve Peterson (Indiana University). Features for Master Rowers, such as how to teach adults to row, how to keep masters motivated for the long haul, and the problem of who will be the coxswain!

Profiles on top 10 rowers in each country leading into the Olympics.
I like that idea a lot - would further the viewing interest plus shine a light on how international the sport has become.

Agreed - wrote a piece that ties to this idea back in December, based on a conversation I had with Mike Teti a while back. https://rowingrelated.substack.com/p/the-future-of-rowing-at-the-olympics

There’s certainly a lot more that could be done for masters rowing. It’s a tricky target market though in terms of engagement.
