Video of the Week: The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race, 2019
Crew Classic Results | Triton wint de Varsity | Cambridge Paints the Tideway Light Blue
It was a crazy busy weekend for rowing, and we’re only just figuring out how to put all the pieces together. In California, San Diego Crew Classic saw what could be a preview of the NCAA Rowing final, with Cal edging Washington and Texas, followed by a very strong Stanford crew (view full results). Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, the 136th Varsity saw Triton hold off Skøll in a thrilling finish (featuring the usual swimming celebrants—see below).
On the women’s side, A.S.R. Nereus took top honors. Look for a feature on this year’s Varsity by noted Dutch photographer Merijn Soeters (who was at the finish line) in the upcoming issue of our premium newsletter.
And, in one of rowing’s most anticipated races, Cambridge made it two sweeps in a row, winning the women’s and men’s reserve and Blue Boat events on the Tideway on a grey day in London.
The above video is the complete live stream, which, curiously enough, doesn’t include the commentary (but does include the coxswains’ commands and all the footage of both Blue Boat races, as well as the accompanying indents and interviews with crew members). You can watch the women’s race beginning at 13:15, and the men’s race beginning at 1:10:41.
There’s also a great feature on James Cracknell starting at 59:47 that is well worth watching, as is the pre-race interview on the Embankment with Matthew Pinsent (which immediately follows the Cracknell feature).
